South Gobi

Gobi Shoulder Retreat

Pre-peak Gobi when the desert is cool, photogenic, and almost empty.

South Gobi
6 Days
Late May
From $8,500 / person

Overview

The Gobi in late May is a different desert than the one travelers see at the height of summer. Temperatures are pleasant rather than punishing, the air is clear, the dunes carry better light, and the camps have not yet filled with peak-season groups. For guests who want the Gobi without the heat or the crowds, this is the right window.

The journey is built around Unveil's Gobi Deluxe Camp — a private encampment of insulated en-suite gers maintained for our guests near the Flaming Cliffs and Khongor dunes — with chef Enkhee in residence for the week and Tuvshin guiding overland. Photographic light, slow pacing, and high-quality F&B define the experience more than any single landmark on the route.

Off-peak desert

Fewer guests, better light, and softer temperatures than the summer Gobi.

Private camp residence

Six nights at Unveil's Gobi Deluxe Camp with consistent staff and a familiar dining ger across the journey.

Iconic Gobi range

Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), Khongor Els dunes, Yolyn Am, and the Khermen Tsav badlands.

Photographer-led sessions

Sunrise and sunset photography with Saikhnaa, with prepared shot lists and rover-based setups for low-light work.

What to expect

Cool desert nights

Daytime highs around 20°C and nights still close to freezing; the camp is heated.

Concentrated landscape

The Gobi requires longer driving distances between sites — driving days are sequenced for morning and evening light, with midday rest at camp.

Private dining and pace

Meals are scheduled around light rather than a clock; chef Enkhee adjusts to guest preferences daily.

Photographic priority

This itinerary prioritizes light over sightseeing; guests who do not photograph will still benefit, but the shaping of the days is photographer-aware.
